| TOPIC: “Assessing the Risk of Fraud in a Global Economy” SPEAKER: Dr. Jerry Wald, Ph.D, Ernst & Young, LLP DESCRIPTION OF SPEECH: Fraud has become a major concern for global corporations and for any company having business internationally. Any company doing business internationally should be increasingly concerned about how they can assess their fraud risk exposure and putting systems into place to address these risks. Issues answered will include: 1) What fraud events and trends led to the heightened awareness of fraud risk 2) How some companies are going about assessing their risks 3) What monitoring and control systems are introduced to address these risks Examples from multiple industries will be used to illustrate the point and ties to the ACFE, AICPA, and IIA's joint exposure draft regarding guidance to organizations on establishing an approach to managing the risk of fraud entitled "Managing the Business Risk of Fraud: A Practical Guide" will also be used. SPEAKER BIO: Jerry has over 25 years of corporate experience protecting a company's intellectual property from misappropriation and products from the risks associated with third-party manufacturers, counterfeiting and diversion. Since joining EY he leads its Brand Protection Services team which has conducted numerous assessments of intellectual property, product, manufacturing operation risk assessments for clients in the Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical, and Technology Industries. His team helps clients improve internal business practices, process controls and measures of effectiveness to reduce these risks. His team also works with other Ernst & Young practices to provide ongoing brand and product compliance, intellectual property rights registration and performance monitoring services. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, Jerry served in a number of Executive positions with a U.S. Fortune 100 diversified manufacturing company. These positions included Director of Business Development and Technology Strategy, Corporate Director of Intellectual Property Strategy and Executive Officer of the wholly owned intellectual property company responsible for technology commercialization through licensing. Jerry graduated with an A.B. from Princeton, a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and an MIM from the University of St. Thomas. He is trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt for Leaders and holds the CFE certification. |
