| TOPIC: "Criminal and Civil Fraud Prosecution” SPEAKER: Dana Aratani, Deputy District Attorney Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Consumer Protection Division DESCRIPTION OF SPEECH: Mr. Aratani will address the differences in civil and criminal prosecutions beginning with the investigation phase through discovery and trial and even the appellate phase thereafter. He will also discuss how civilian investigators can work with his office. SPEAKER BIO: Mr. Aratani has been a deputy district attorney for over 17 years, most of which was in the Consumer Protection Division where he is currently assigned. He is also a certified public accountant licensed in California. Mr. Aratani has tried cases on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office in both the criminal and civil courts. He has provided training to other prosecutors in the Office on the subject of civil procedure. The prosecutions handled by Mr. Aratani in the Consumer Protection Division include allegations of unfair and unlawful business practices, false advertising, theft, conspiracy, and antitrust. The cases handled have involved many different areas, including car dealerships, the gasoline industry, the shipping industry, and food products. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Randy Ouchi, Internal Auditor, Wilshire Bank Mr. Ouchi has over 28 years Internal Audit experience, working for four different banks over that period. He was hired by 3 of those bank's to start their internal audit functions, and is currently working for Wilshire State Bank as their Internal Audit Director. He is both a Certfied Fraud Examiner and a Certified Internal Auditor. |
